Guide To: Have a more Sustainable Valentines

Guide To: Have a more Sustainable Valentines

More than 124 million adults in the US celebrate Valentine's day. Combined they exchange 36-million heart shaped boxes, 180 million greeting cards, 198 million roses, consume 881 thousand bottles of champagne and love their way through 58 million pounds of chocolate. This generates more carbon emissions than driving around the world 3,993 times!

Now, with the special day drawing closer and closer, you’re probably wondering how to celebrate with your special someone. If you’re anything like us, you’re probably wondering how you can enjoy Valentines, while giving our planet a little love as well. Keeping sustainability at the heart of every purchase isn’t easy, but hopefully we can help.

SAY NO TO FLOWERS

Firstly, I love Valentine's Day flowers as much as the next person! However, the sheer amount spent on floral gifts around the Valentines period is shocking. Instead why not swap for seasonal, fair trade or organically grown flowers? Even better, you could gift your significant other a houseplant that would last years rather than days, I'm sure they would appreciate that just as much!

MAKE AN ECO-FRIENDLY CLOTHING CHOICE

In 2019, 261 million pound was spent on clothing and lingerie. Why not opt for purchasing off an ethical brand or small business this year? At Foofy, we currently have 20% off our organic cotton loungewear gift sets which are perfect when you want to get your partner something they will wear all year round. Organic, recycled and chemical- free, our loungewear is safe for the Planet and safe on your skin! Our Loungewear is also unisex so you could treat yourself too. ‘Couple’s that match together, stay together’ I think they say...

SCRAP THE CARDS

It takes the equivalent of 8,000 trees to make the UK’s 25 million Valentines cards. This is a sad fact when the reality is the cards get thrown away after a few days. A great alternative is making your own homemade card out of a picture of you and your partner. You could even send an ecard to save our poor trees completely.

COOK FROM HOME

This year why not put that little extra effort in and cook a fancy dinner made with local, organic ingredients. A home-cooked meal is a meaningful gesture that’s not only good for the environment but for your wallet as well. If you do want to go out for a meal, try visiting your local restaurants and support a small business.

SHOW SOME LOVE TO THOSE WHO NEED IT

Valentines is the perfect time to show your love to your significant other and family, but why not show your love to someone who really needs it this year. Our chosen charity The Water Project - thewaterproject.org - provides access to clean, safe and reliable water and sanitation solutions across Africa. Join us this Valentine’s Day and donate to those who need it most.

WRITE A POEM OR LETTER

Show your partner your love by writing them a love letter or poem. We can guarantee that this extra special, personal touch will be the best present anyone can receive. It’s also budget friendly and saves on any unnecessary spending. Just let your heart do the talking.

TIME IS PRICELESS

This is probably the best tip in our blog that may seem like a no brainer. The best thing you can do for your partner is simply spend time with them, go for a long walk and find some amazing views, spend some quality time with your family. You could even learn a hobby together such as cooking that will surely bring you closer.

We hope some of these points help you to enjoy a more sustainable valentine, and remember to love yourself more than anyone else.
